Will someone please help me? I can’t access my WP Dashboard or Website and I have some critical work to do today. I was advised to rename my “plugins” directory to “plugins-hold” and it would disable all plugins. But it didn’t work. I still get this message:

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Aside from disabling plugins, there are further steps you can try. For instance:

    (1) Temporarily deactivate the current theme by deleting it (but keep a local backup, obviously).

    (2) Download a fresh copy of the latest WordPress release. On your existing site, rename the wp-admin and wp-includes folders to something else (e.g. wp-admin.old and wp-includes.old). Now upload the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from the fresh copy.

    (3) From your fresh copy of the latest WordPress release, upload all of the PHP files from the top-level directory.

    (4) Delete the current .htaccess file (keep a backup if you have any special customisations) and replace it with a blank.

I tend to do everything in the above list. It’s a bit of a kitchen sink approach, but there’s no magic spell when an internal server error pops up, so sometimes you just have to try a few different things.
