Server load and performance impact

I’m finding that one of the competing chat plugins out there is pretty heavy on the server load. It keeps crashing a site that is on shared hosting.
What kind of impact does Simple Ajax Chat have and will it perform okay on shared hosting? Has it been known to crash sites on less-than powerful hosting setups?
