• HI everyone, hope someone can give me hand with this problem.

a couple of weeks ago i started having problems with wp. i can’t seem to be able to upload pictures or any type of files to my server using wp. every time i try to upload a pic i get this messege:

Unable to create directory /home/pielurba/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/07. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

also when i try to backup my wp tables i get a similar error messege.

WARNING: Your backup directory does NOT exist, and we cannot create it.
Using your FTP client, try to create the backup directory yourself: /home/pielurba/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/backup-32197/
WARNING: Your backup directory is NOT writable!

i know it has something to do with the permissions on the server and/or folders of my wp, but i don’t know how to solve it, i tried changing the permissions through my ftp program accessing the properties of the folders (CHMOD).

i also replaced the wp-includes and wp-content folders to see if that could help, but it didn’t.

so this is about it…maybe it’s something easy but sincerely i have no idea on what to do next… if anyone knows how to solve this issue i’d apreciate it..

    thanks.

    Don Patto.

  • Do what esmi suggests and check with your web host to make sure they aren’t disabling any sort of file permissions that you might need. For example, many hosts require that you use 755 instead of 777.

I’m having a similar issue. I’m trying to upload a custom logo to a theme and am getting an error:

Can’t upload! Directory … is not writable!
Change write permissions with CHMOD 755 or 777

I went into FileZilla and changed the permissions for the upload file and some others to 755 but that didn’t change anything. Does it matter that I used the auto-install? I’m access the site through a different host user name than the one that was there from the auto install. I don’t know the password for the auto install user name so I can’t use that. Just strange that I changed the permissions and nothing happened. Thanks for the help.

the auto installer uses your ftp info

make /wp-content and all image folders beneath it 777
    upload an image
    chmod folders to 755
    should work from now on

    Thanks that worked.

Please help. I have changed ALL my file permissions to 755 and no matter what they don’t register as writable. My server host has done it as well, with no success. I have had the problem with multiple themes and have reloaded WP FOUR times to no avail. I have no idea what else to do. Can anyone help?
