Server unresponsive for 10-15 minutes after uploading images

AFter my latest update (I missed a couple updates – not sure what version I was running previously), whenever I upload images to create a gallery, it will upload one or two images, and then my server/host goes unresponsive for 10-15 minutes. I read something about transient cron jobs, and wonder if this is the cause.
This plug-in used to work great, but the latest updates have made updating my site completely impossible. Not happy!

I’ve disabled all plug-ins except for nextgen, and not surprisingly, the problem returns. I’ve disabled nextgen and tried other gallery plug-ins which work fine.
My site is in a redirect loop for 30 minutes after modifying a gallery (creating, importing, or adding images).
I’ve worked with my web host, and we tracked down the following errors in my log that occur during the time that the website is not able to be accessed:
