Set allow comments default for pages

Generally I don’t like comments and trackbacks on my pages. Posts yes, pages no.

How would one go about setting the default for comments and trackbacks for pages to false?

It like the idea of allowing the user (me) to edit the comments and turn them on at need. But I would prefer pages default to false.

Is there a way this can be set?
Or, if I write a plugin for this, what hook would I use?

Yes, I’m nuub when it comes to everything under the hood for wp. But, I’m anxious to learn.
