• When I updated wordpress I lost my categories, probably for problems with a plugin.
I have many posts, now categorized as “general”. How can a set the categories of each post without editing them one by one?

  • I hope you disabled your plugins before you upgraded. Version upgraded from and to what? You will find different fixes to loss of categories in forum search depending what caused the problem
    Some solutions which worked

I lost all categories. I see the database (in the new wp_terms table) and all categories are gone. Now i created the categories, and I want so set them to all post, but I don’t want to edit each post.

    Any recommendation?

    No recommendation?
I need to edit all the posts?

It depends on what version you upgraded from and what version you upgraded to. This solution worked on recent upgrade from WP 2.2 to WP 2.6.2 – if you also have XML backup of your WordPress site before you upgraded, you can import the XML it to your upgraded install, associated categories can be re-established in your upgraded install.

I have this same question but for other reasons, and yes I have an hourly back up emailed to me but I want to know if there is a similar way as well.

I decided to pare down my categories to 8 (from like 70) so I could keep my blog focused. I would use tags to be more descriptive. I deleted my categories because I assumed there was a way to Manage>Categories and select multiple posts and assign them the same category.

There must be a way to do this. WP has so many more advanced features that I must be overlooking how to do this.

I used this plug-in called Batch Category for the same purpose. It worked well…

    Good luck!

    thanks I’ll check it out.

The plug in seemed to take a while to get used to but I think it is working fine.

I am having trouble because I would like to remove some categories and add some others but I can only do it one step at a time. It is useful but still time consuming.

The Batch Category plugin is showing errors in my logs though. Is this normal, something about links not working. I’m sorry I forgot exactly what it said.

I think you have to a blank search first to call up all the posts. Then check / uncheck them to set categories in a batch. Agree this is time consuming but it’s the best we have so far..

I am actually looking for a plugin for a multi author blog. We want to assign default category to each authors so they wont have to check on the category checkbox each time. Can anyone help here?
