Not sure if this hack is correct

Yes, this will be a plugin option since I have seen a few users trying to work this out.

@all I created a fork of this plugin called WP Comment Subscriptions that includes many bug fixes and several new features, including most recently an option to select a default Advanced subscription option:

New ‘default subscription type’ Option. If you’re using Advanced subscriptions, you can now specify the Advanced default subscription type (“None”, “All new comments”, or “Replies to this comment”) in Settings -> Comment Subscriptions -> Comment Form -> Advanced default. This will be the default option shown on the comment form. See: https://github.com/raamdev/wp-comment-subscriptions/issues/6

WP Comment Subscriptions imports all data and options from Subscribe to Comments Reloaded, so you can easily try it out. ??

Hello Guys version 140128 is now available with new fixes and upgrades.
