set user pod avatar field

I have defined a field in my extended user pod which is of type avatar. I load the pod’s fields using a gravity form which has a picture upload field. How do i add the picture url from the form into the corresponding user pod field? There seems not to be a column in the user pod table which corresponds to the avatar field.
