Well, the non-backstretch image is just set to use whatever your site has created for its standard “large” image size in the Media settings, which is going to be the same dimensions as whatever you uploaded. In version 2.5, there will be a filter, (display_featured_image_large_image_size) to change that large image to a different custom image size, but it would be up to you to define the aspect ratio on that to get it cropped consistently. Hope that helps!

OK thanks for the speedy reply! I’m advising my client to crop and upload his pics in a 16:9 ratio. He wants to vary between backstretch and regular sizes on different posts. I think a ratio is the best way to go for consistent formatting.

    Thanks again.

That sounds like a good idea to me! The other would work, but use more resources in the end, I think.

Has the new filter (display_featured_image_large_image_size) been implemented and, if so, do you have sample code to change the custom size?

Yes, it was added in version 2.5. Check this thread for an example of how to implement it and make sure the custom image size is used even if a really large image is uploaded:

Adjust size of featured image on post…

    Hope that helps!
