• Please can someone tell me (in very simple terms) how to:
    a) set up an RSS feed button on my blog i.e. so that other people can just press the little orange icon when they visit my blog and get my feed
    b) set up a subscribe by email button, a very simple one whereby someone just has to type their email address in to the field and then press a ‘subscribe’ button to the right

Can anyone help with this? I’ve read the WordPress advice on RSS feeds and can’t make head nor tail of it… Any pointers v welcome

Yeah i have this exact problem too…i read this:

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/WordPress_Feeds

but it didnt say how to get the logo from scratch, i feel like it assumes i know stuff that i dont (yet!)

    thx

Help! I have the same problem. I don’t have an RSS feed button on my blog because I don’t know how to get it there – and all the Word Press “stuff” I’ve read hasn’t told me how to do it.

You have to get an image, upload it to your server, and make a link. You can do this by uploading the file in media and linking to it in your sidebar, or you can edit your theme.

WordPress doesn’t have a feed by email feature however, so you’ll need a plugin for that. MailChip and Feedburner are popular.

Thank you for your response and for telling me I needed to get the image and upload it. That’s the first step. I can do that! Now one more question: I thought that the RSS was run by a JavaScript. Where do I get that code?

one more question: How do I know what my “feed URL” is? Is it my site URL plus “/rss” ?? Thank you.

I fixed this in the end – v simple solution is simply to use a widget (seems to be the solution for all these problems!) i’m using RSS Icon Widget which works v well.

jeremyhogan – did you have to set up the RSS feed and then get a separate widget or is an all-in-one widget? And if so, what is it called?

I’ve had so many problems with this. Most recently I downloaded a ‘subscribe here’ widget and the RSS button works but it’s telling me the email subscribe option hasn’t been set-up, no idea how to set it up. Also, the button is two big and the RSS/subscribe buttons are overlapping but I can’t seen an option to resize them.

I really really hate this … I cannot figure out how to activate the RSS button on my Blog. I followed the directions as far as I could for installing Feedburner, but then the directions said I needed to click Options in Word press and I see no OPTIONS menu or link. I have visitors to my blog asking me where the BUTTON is so they can subscribe to my blog and I just have to tell them that I don’t know how to put it there and I can’t get anyone to tell me how. I have read so many webpages and watched tutorials but still cannot figure out what is needed. I just want a numbered list that makes sense. I wish I had never built this blog because I can’t put a subscriber button on it. I mean, what’s the point? I should have just built another website instead of a blog.

See this post: (the second comment provided by “esmi”)

Coming here and venting frustration is not helpful to yourself, or to the millions of readers who use this forum.

I understand things can get complicated sometimes… but that’s when you should take a deep breath, clear your head, and determine a tactical, sequential approach to your problem.

I mean, what’s the point? I should have just built another website instead of a blog.

Then maybe the rss feed isn’t as important as you are making it out to be??

Okay, Josh. Point taken. I have read that page and it didn’t help. Sorry I got angry. I give up now.
    Thanks anyway.

No worries. Are you sure you want to give up?

    What is your website URL?

Josh – thing is, it’s so frustrating not being able to get something so fundamental to a successful blog to work. And also not being able to email wordpress direct rather than using the forums, which I have to say I haven’t found very useful so far.

Flash g – completely sympathise, I’ve also read that page several times, tried out three different widgets and I still can’t get the thing to work properly/look right. Someone on a different forum has recommended the ‘ultimate follow me’ widget – I’m going to try again from scratch tonight and see if I can get this one to work.

Actelliott – I absolutely agree. It’s very frustrating. Don’t think I haven’t been there before… and will be there again in the future. I also agree WordPress is a tough software to get expedited resolutions to common problems.

However, I also strongly believe that any problem, big or small, has a self-motivated learning curve. Hence, forum help such as this. Often, there is no direct method, ie 1st do this, 2nd do this… because there is no standard of consistency.

Only through rigorous trial and error will acceptable results be attained. And THIS is the outcome I desire.

Right, yes I see your point and it can be satisfying to solve a problem after working through various possible solutions but I guess I was really just after blogging software that would be straightforward and user-friendly, which I haven’t found wordpress to be at all so far.

anyhow, as you say, now I just need to find a way to sort out the problem – if you have a min, any chance you could have a look at my url https://www.reopeningthecase.co.uk and give me your thoughts on what I need to do to stop the rss and subscribe buttons overlapping and/or how I can activate the email subscribe button so it actually works? Any advice would really be appreciated
