I am fairly new to wordpress and am learning the ins and outs slowly.

I have run into a problem that I can’t seem to solve. I set my 2010 theme in settings/reading to show excerpts on the posts page. (self hosted site) It continues to show the full articles after saving the setting multiple times. I tried a couple of things like deleting the excerpt material from a post but it continues to show the full text no matter what i do.

I tried looking on loop.php for instances of the_excerpt() and those files seem to be okay with the “the_excerpt()” code seeming to be in the right places.

It’s probably important to note that I just upgraded to version 3.1.4 and the upgrade seems to have deleted my blog page. I had a static page for the home page (which was intact after the upgrade) and was using a separate page for posts. After losing that page I simply created another page and then set wp to use that page as the blogging page.

I simply don’t know what to do next and would really appreciate any help. I am stumped.

Thanks for any help. Hopefully this is something silly that I am not seeing…

No – that’s for your RSS feed – not your main posts page display. Twenty Ten shows the full post content on the main posts page – unless you use the <!--more--> tag in your posts.

Aha! Thanks for that quick response. I tried using <!–more–> as a tag in one of the posts but it didn’t have any impact. Maybe I am not understanding what you mean by using the <!–more–> tag? Where and how does one use that?

    Thanks so much.

Are you using the HTML or Visual Editor?

I was using the editor within WP (dashboard/appearance/editor) but could easily go and edit the file via cpanel or ftp. Appreciate your help with this.

The more tag is added to each of your posts – not the theme files.

Aha! Thank you! You just place the <!–more–> tag into the post where you want it to stop being an excerpt. Now I get it!

    Many, many thanks.
