    I looked at my settings page and have a question about one of the choices:

    What does “character set” mean in this setting choice:

    Turn off HTML Cleanup
    Set to yes if you accept submissions from writers that use a different character set than your own. Otherwise leave set to no.

    Basically this supports non-European languages. Kanji is an example of a multi byte character set. English and French are examples of single byte character sets.

    HTML cleanup is meant to strip the “extra” characters (most of them hidden) that MS Word includes in the documents that writers are submitting. These characters can cause a submission to look jumbled when it’s converted to HTML for display in a web browser, and in some cases can cause the submission to become truncated. The default setting should work fine for most publishers – but for our publishers who receive and publish submissions in Japanese leaving the default on will prevent the text from displaying.

    We should add a better description to this field. I hope this helps.
