Setup Questions

  • Greetings.

    I have been using wordpress for a while and recently installed a new server. Rather than move all my old data to the new server, I created a whole new blog. My base os is CentOS5. I’ve had some glitches, and with this new server, I’d like to get them ironed out as I have an expectant of 5 years on this new server.

    I have two blogs on my server. blog1.domain.ca and blog2.domain.ca. I have been trying to get the autoupdate and plugin features working properly right from the start, but I am having some problems with that.

    I’m not sure what permissions I should have for /var/www/blog1 and /var/www/blog2. I have created two users on my server and set their home login folders to /var/www/blog1 and /var/www/blog2. I am getting an error with a particular plugin php-recent-topics whereas it says I do not have permissions to edit the config page for that plugin.

    I don’t have a problem reinstalling both blogs from scratch, as there is no content there to speak of yet. I’m wondering if I should have performed some particular steps to get this working better.

    I also have phpBB3 on both blogs, as I want a little place for forums for certain things as well. I have created two databases, one for each blog, and then added the phpBB3 to each blogs database.

    Can anyone offer some recommendations on how I should proceed with this? Should I have two user accounts on the system, one for each blog to make updates and installation of plugins and stuff easier? This is my own personal home server, and I have full access to it.

  • When you set up your SQL user accounts for your sites, give them full permissions.

    So should I create the same username for the SQL account as my blog login account?

    Example: blog user admin account called thakk, and then in mysql grant user thakk all permissions?

    Thanks. for the reply. I decided to wipe the directories and start anew.

    I am working on creating the two new databases and setting up the users. I will make them the same name as the login name. Previously I used ‘admin’.

    There is no requirement to use the same name for the WordPress user name and the MySQL database username.

    This seems to be working better so far. I’m not sure if I should chmod my files to 664 blog:apache but may consider that. I’ve just been editing the ones that need rw access as I come across them.
