Hello dear Email Subscribers support team,

I do not blame you if you find this hard to believe, but even in a highly computerized country like The Netherlands there are still people, mostly couples, who find it convenient to share the same email address. Based on the name of the addressee in the email they then use that email or not – I suppose. In the few hundred contacts I have to handle for a certain society, there are several of these email ‘collisions’.

For Email Subscribers that is of course a problem, because the contact is uniquely identified by the email address. Is there a possibility to get around this?

    Best regards!

  • Hello Henk,

Could you let us know how do you want this to happen? We will see what we can do.

    Hello @vaksupport,

Thank you for your willingness to look into this. I think that the best would be to do the following three (together):

    1. The identification of the contact is not based on the email address alone, but on the combination of first name, last name and email address
    2. The message reporting the result of an import will provide a warning if a new contact has been imported with an email address that was already in use.
    3. The messages reporting the result of an import are extended with information which contacts raised warnings or errors during the import.

#1 will allow people to use the same email address.

#2 and #3 together will provide an easy way for the person doing the import to find out, in the case that there is a duplicate email address, if this is really a new contact or if there is a small difference in the spelling of the name or so.

#3 will also be (I think: very) useful to find out what was wrong if there was a problem with a contact during an import action for any other reason. At this time, if you import a lot of contacts together and you get a message that there was some problem with -say- two of them, it can be quite a hassle to find out where and what the problems were exactly.

You may even want to consider always producing a detailed import result log. After all, the import of contacts can be a serious action for which you may want to see a documented result.

    Hello,

I see that this item has been marked as resolved, but that is not correct. I just installed v4.5.4 and I still cannot import contacts that share the same email address.

Maybe you decided that you do not want to implement a feature that contacts can share the same email address? Please let us know.

    @henk-barreveld ,

We’re sorry for marking the conversation as resolved. That’s a mistake.

    > #1 will allow people to use the same email address.
    > The identification of the contact is not based on the email address alone, but on the combination of first name, last name and email address

Email addresses are always meant to be private/personal and it is not recommended to use a single email addresses by more than one individual. You can use shared inboxes and that is a different story.

We have First Name, Last Name and Email columns for users’ convenience and the first two fields are optional while the Email is mandatory.

    > The message reporting the result of an import will provide a warning if a new contact has been imported with an email address that was already in use.

If the importing file has a same contact which is already in the Audience database, we show a warning that X number of contacts already exists and finish importing rest of the contacts without interrupting.

    > The messages reporting the result of an import are extended with information which contacts raised warnings or errors during the import.

Currently, it is not possible. But it is already in our roadmap and we will inform you as soon as we release the feature.

    > You may even want to consider always producing a detailed import result log. After all, the import of contacts can be a serious action for which you may want to see a documented result.

That’s a good idea! We have forwarded it to our product management team to consider it as a feature request. While this is a feature our product managers are aware of, we don’t have any specific timeline for releasing it. We will inform you as soon as we have an update.

Should you have any further queries, please do no hesitate to get back to us.?

    Hello @henk-barreveld,

I came across this ticket so just wanted to let you know that we have improved importing process in the latest versions of Email Subscribers and we now show the list of subscribers that were not added during the import process along with its reason. I hope you check it out.

    Thank You!

    Hello @asmipatel,

I am sorry to say that until now I missed your message in my email.

Furthermore, I am afraid that I concluded that I had too many problems with your plugin Email Subscribers & Newsletters. Therefore I moved to a different plugin, shortly after @vaksupport’s last message, above.

Nevertheless, I hope that my comments have given you a few useful ideas and I wish you all the best with your plugin!

    Best regards,
    Henk Barreveld
