Shopping cart does not populate

WP e-Commerce version: 3.8.9.4
Gold Cart version: 2.9.7
Theme: Custom HTML5 Boilerplated Grid System
I did this: Added to item to cart click checkout
I expected WP e-Commerce to do this: Get to checkout and cart shows item
Instead it did this: Cart is empty
– Note: if user is logged in the cart will show the item, this error only occurs for non-registered users
