• Hi Everyone!
    I’m interested in creating a shopping website for yarn; Do you have to use paypal? I currently run an independent website, that uses the merchant I.D. to shop, that can take credit card info and payment directly. It that type of function available on WordPress? Or do most businesses use Paypal? Thanks for the feedback!

  • WordPress does not have any built in support for e-commerce. There are many plugins available which support numerous different payment gateways.

    Thanks for the feedback Chris! I suppose I have a more specific question, because I couldn’t find my answer for certain. Right now I’m using Intuit Storefront, Store Administrator. This site allows direct credit card payment without creating an account and their processing fees are very low. Frankly, it was a big pain to set-up so I’m hesitant to go elsewhere.

    I did find this blog post that had a similar question;

    And this might be the solution?

    That’s for your time!

    Shopp is a commercial plugin for WordPress (full disclosure: I’m the project lead) and it has an add-on that integrates it with Intuit Merchant Services for payment processing. You can find it on the Shopp website at shopplugin.net.

    To answer your original question, a lot of websites (WordPress websites included) use PayPal. The term “most” is probably a bit too strong. There are many, many payment processing solutions out there, so there is quite a distribution of which ones are used. PayPal is definitely a very popular solution because in many ways it has a low barrier to entry to get started.
