shortcodes not working

I was following the directions on the plugin page regarding implementing shortcodes to translate however it does not seem to work. The shortcode is as follows:

[wpm_translate][:en]Product description[:fr]Description du produit[:][wpm_translate]

It just displays the code plainly. I’ve also tried the following:

[wpm_translate lang="en"]Product description[/wpm_translate]
[wpm_translate lang="fr"]Description du produit[/wpm_translate]

To check to see if this would work however, it displays both language translations.

Can someone help to look into this for a fix? The concept itself would be very useful especially on visual editors.
