Shortcodes not working in newsletter

Hello,

I’m using the [user:firstname | default:reader] shortcode in my newsletters, but it’s now showing up in the email. Neither the firstname field nor the default ‘reader’ shows up – it’s simply as if the shortcode isn’t even there. I’ve tried it in both the subject as well as the email text, to no avail. Please help.
