shortening permalinks in WC 2.4.0

My client’s prodcution site is currently running WC 2.2.10 and I am working on a staging copy upgrading and testing some custom functionality for the latest version, 2.5.2.

While testing the upgrade, my client noticed that product permalinks are a lot longer in the updated version. He objected to this change and insists on keeping the current shorter URLs, even though they appear to backward compatible.

After playing with the permalinks settings and not getting anywhere, I looked at the change log and saw that one of the features of WC 2.4 was including the full category path in permalinks.

Here is an example:
WC 2.2.10:
domain.com/product/wood-stair-treads-risers/8070-stair-treads/
WC 2.4.0 +:
domain.com/product/wood-stair-parts/stair-treads-materials/wood-stair-treads-risers/8070-stair-treads/

Is there an easy to keep the shorter pre-2.4.0 permalinks format?
