Shorter Posts on the Home Page

I have my site setup so that whatever I post goes to the home page so that anyone that views the site can see the recent posts. However, they are posting in their entirety. Some of these posts are pretty long and anyone viewing may not see the other ones because they have to scroll down so far. Is there any way to make the posts on the home page just a sample of the post, so that anyone that wants to read it has to click the post and be redirected to the actual page? Also, I do not know what version of WordPress I have. I do everything over the internet. Do I need to install something onto my computer?
