I understand that child theme is for customized modifications. A lot of WooCommerce documentation were written to suggest that any customization should be done with child theme(s).

I also heard that, with the most recent WordPress releases, child themes were not necessary for user customizations. I am wondering if this also applies to WooCommerce installed on the latest WordPress releases (e.g. my current installation is 4.9.8)?

  • If you are going to do major customization you should always, always use a child theme.

When you customize WC you then copy its files to your child theme and always, always make sure to update them at every upgrade to the framework.
