Should I upgrade to 3.8.6?
-
First, thank you for the plugin. I’m using the free version. I use it to display one very simple Google map with two markers on it and it works perfectly.
I’ve just read through the changes you’ve made to version 3.8.6 and I’m worried that if I proceed with the upgrade the plugin will just stop working. Here’s why I’ve come to that conclusion.
I have not applied for a Google Maps API key. I’ve read through the Google link you’ve supplied in Settings and I really don’t understand it – it’s just too complicated for me. So I assume that this means I am using your public key. Is that correct?
If correct, then since 3.8.6 no longer supports the use of the public key, if I upgrade, your plugin will simply stop working. Is that correct?
I understand the issue of “security” with the public key and I would be happy to get my own key but looking at the link you’ve given in Settings of
https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/tutorial#api_key
I’m not sure what to do. For example, at the beginning of this web page it says that the target Audience is for people who are familiar with Javascript programming – I know very little. This article also says “Don’t use if for Google’s API for Business”. I don’t know what that means.Perhaps I have misunderstood who should be using your plugin. Do you have to be an expert in web development or can it be used by people like me who understand some concepts but are not experts?
