Show Descriptions in Galleries

How can I display the Descriptions in the Gallery thumbnails when my main page is an album which links to show galleries?

I use the code below to show a complete album with numerous galleries

[nggalbum id=1 template=compact]

Clicking on a gallery thumbnail then opens the gallery in thumbnail view, but without Descriptions. If I change the template to [nggalbum id=1 template=caption] I get a render error.

For reference, I know that if I use the shortcode [nggallery id=1 template=caption] it works, but I only show the one gallery. This is not what I am after.
