Show posts by year with yearly navigation tabs

I am trying to create an archive type page that shows posts from a category sorted by year. Each year that has posts needs to be clickable in a navigational tab above the post listings. When the tabs are clicked the posts for just that year are to appear beneath and all other tabs hide. Anybody have any ideas? I’m trying to figure out if I should use wp_get_archives or just a normal loop since it will only pull from one category of posts. I’m just not sure how to tie together the navigational tabs with the post listings beneath by year and for it to auto-generate a new tab when we come into 2013.
