I’m just wondering if there is a way to edit a template so I can show the rating box but not the excerpt on a review page. I like the excerpt on the index page, but not on the rating. I’d like my ratings to go at the bottom of my reviews, but having the excerpt down there doesn’t make any sense. I also can’t use CSS because it doesn’t effect screen reader output for the blind.

Any information would be really appreciated. I don’t know enough PHp to write anything from scratch, but I can edit files as needed if I know what to do.

    thanks

I forgot to add, I would also have to edit the heading at the top of the rating box that relistst the title. In general I want to edit the rating box so it is only my ratings and nothing else.

    thanks

    Hello,
How about hiding the section you don’t want with CSS? Also, can you provide me with a link to one of your reviews?

I don’t want to use CSS as that is purely a visual fix, and it won’t effect any blind users using a screen reader…which I also am. In the below link it is just a tester post with the rating box at the bottom of the review. What I’m trying to do is get rid of the heading level 2 with the title and the excerpt paragraph under that which doesn’t fit into the post. If I just don’t put in an excerpt on review creation then it re enters the first paragraph of the review down there which is even more out of place.

I’ve looked everywhere for a way to exclude the title and the excerpt in the rating box but with no luck at all. If there is an option to show only box and nothing else that would be great, but i don’t think there is, or I’m just completely missing it.

    Hello again,
So I took a closer look at my early design decisions for this “review box” feature. My original intent was for it to be used with the “Basic” review template, the one that has no book info in it, so that explains why the book’s title and synopsis are the first 2 elements.

I didn’t imagine a user would use the feature with those 2 important elements missing. With that in mind, if you were to do this, wouldn’t it leave score box just floating on the left by itself with the right being totally empty?

Your use-case seems really odd to me, so I may need some time to re-work this feature to fit what you have in mind.

The main reason I wanted it, and there may be a better way. I just wanted to show a scoring system on a post. There is a written review, then a score for the bbook. Something even as easy as goodreads with just 0-5 stars would be okay, but the star system in this isn’t screen reader accessible. It just reads as a blank link for blind users. I liked the idea of having rating criteria like characters, plot, pacing and so on, but with the ability to insert that into a post somewhere. I feel like I have to be missing something somewhere. It may be there just not something I can pick up with a screen reader, I’m not sure. Is there an easy way to just show the reviewer’s rating for the book they are reviewing?

Either that or if there is a way to have a rank and rating part that can be added to a post which only shows the ratings, nothing else, just overall score then the ratings. like the below.

    overall score: 4.8
    plot: 5
    characters 4.5
    pacing 5

I thought that was the use for the scorr and star box, but I guess I am using them wrong.

In short I just want to display a reviewer’s score on a page in a way that blind people using a screen reader can also access and use.

OK, your use-case is viable, so I will start working on a new review box layout this weekend. I should be able to complete it by next Friday.

BTW… I was under the impression that added a title tag to the stars would be enough for screen readers. Like on this example review https://recencio.com/review/crowfall-ravens-mark-3/

    Am I correct?

Ah thank you so very much, that would be great to have.

with that link it does say
    “graphic Crowfall
    4 out of 5 stars
    Author: Ed McDonald”
but for some reason when I use stars on my site it is just the text “link”. It may need an alt tag or value as well. I’ve seen alt and value used quite a bit when dealing with browser based games and their accessible labeling of graphics. If there are stars in another location I don’t pick them up at all.

I’ll have to take your word for it. I’m blind and use a screen reader, so the image thing doesn’t work out too well.

Sorry about my total ignorance, I read your reference to being blind as “visually impaired”, I should know better.

With this new shortcode I have added title tags to each element of the score box. So now the elements should read as “Overall Score – 3.3 out of 5”, “Story – 1.6 out of 5”, “Dialogue – 3.9 out of 5” and so on.

No problem, and that sounds wonderful. Thanks so much for being open to the changes.

    Hello again,

I’ve just pushed a new update with a new shortcode for you to use. So, you will add your book’s score information to the “Review Score” box but do not check the “Enable Rating Box” checkbox. Then in your review you can add the new “[rcno-score-box]” shortcode.
