Side bar customization

I would like to have the side bar only show on the home page and have a full width template on all the others. I created a full width template using the instructions here: https://www.templatemonster.com/help/wordpress-how-to-remove-a-sidebar-from-a-specific-pagepages.html which did not work for the Tonic Theme. I also tried the fullwidth template plugin which does not really work either. Can anyone help?
