• Hello,

I am running a site on a twenty seventeen child theme and the shop is powered by Woocommerce.

I used to have a widget in the sidebar of the shop showing different product categories and the woocommerce basket.

I updated the Woocomerce plugin and the twenty seventeen theme – now the sidebar widget has disappeared.

This is the page in question:

    https://l-13.org/shop/

I can still see the old widget in the Appearance > Widgets category in the back end. But when I am in the Customiser on the front end it says there are no widget areas on the shop page.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Thanks.

    Best,

    SP

Hi @lightindustrial13 – in what way had you previously added a widgetized sidebar to the shop page, do you recall? Twenty Seventeen doesn’t come with any WooCommerce-specific templates, so perhaps you either created a custom one in your theme, or modified another template, such as the index or archive template. If you modified theme files directly like that, it would explain why your changes were lost when you updated Twenty Seventeen, because updating the theme replaces all your theme files with newer copies.

To prevent this from happening in the future, you’ll want to put create a child theme and make your changes there. That way, you’ll get the benefit of theme updates, while preserving your changes whenever the theme gets updated.

    Hi Kathryn,

I am already using a child theme which is why I thought the update would not affect things. I added a widget using the widget section at the back end (dashboard > appearance > widgets) and selecting it to replace the sidebar on the shop page. Unfortunately I am not allowed to upload a screenshot to show you.

I think it has something to do with updating Woocommerce, I have posted my question on their forum as well with no response.

Any ideas as to how to add a sidebar in woocommerce would be appreciated, thanks.

From what I can see the T17 theme has an option to display content on every page, if you go to Appearances > Customiser > Widget > Blog Sidebar and add the widgets you want do they appear as before?

I was checking a few pages on your site and I can’t see the widget so I was wondering if you still have them in Customiser. However, you can add screenshot to https://snipboard.io/ the site will provide a new link which you can share here.
