• I just downloaded, ftp’d and activated Sidebar Widgets for my Sirius themed WordPress blog, version 2.1.2.

Tell me please, how do I access this plugin and begin making changes to my sidebar? Thank you.

  • If your theme is sidebar widget compliant you go to the admin area and select the Presentation section. You’ll see an option there now called sidebar widgets. Go there and drag and drop the widgets to the areas available. You click the little indicator on the upper right of the widget to access it’s options.

Better to delete that plugin, upgrade to 2.2, and either use the WordPress Default 1.6 theme or find another theme that is Widget compatible.

Version 2.2 introduced Widgets as part of the core code (no plugin needed). See Widgets SubPanel.

Okay well I’m afraid Sirius by Olaf A Schmitz isn’t Sidebar Widget compatible then, as it’s not available when I go to Presentation. Just Theme Editor and Options, a part of the theme.

My only issue with changing is, I really like my look!

MichaelH, you said version2.2 has widgets as part of the code? So what if I upgrade to 2.2 and keep my theme? Is that possible?

What if I download 2.2, deactivate plugins, run the upgrade script, then reactivate sidebar widgets… will that work?

Thanks so much for your help.

I believe you would have problems activating the Widget plugin. Not only that, but in some cases, even though the Widget plugin is deactivated, people have had to delete the plugin to get the ‘built-in’ widget capability to work.

Oh that’s fine. i have no problem deleting it along with every other plugin. What I’m saying is, can I keep my current theme and upgrade to 2.2?

Then I’ll install plugins fresh, that’s no problem. Can I do this? Thanks again for writing back.

You don’t need to delete every plugin, just the Widgets plugin., just deactivate the other plugins.

You theme may work with no problem with 2.2. That’s called an equivocal statement ??

MichaelH, thanks for the help. I was able to install WP 2.2 upgrade no problem, thanks to Dreamhost 1 click installs.

It looks like my theme, Sirius, doesn’t allow widgets. ; ( But I really like the look of my blog right now

Is there any way I can easily make it sidebar widget compatible?

    Thanks again.

Take a look at the WordPress Default 1.6 theme’s sidebar.php for examples of widgetizing a theme.
