sidebar will not display on the side of page – 2012

The sidebar displays on the side of post pages and custom post types, but not on individual pages. I’ve tried all the different widget/sidebar settings on the individual pages but can’t get it to work. On pages, the widgets can only be made to show in the footer in the optional front page style
