Maybe I am misinterpreting one of the uses of the this plugin, but the reason I am using it is because I want to export widgets AND sidebar’s from a site and be able to import those sidebars and widgets. The widgets are exporting and importing fine but the sidebars are being placed as inactive. Here is the message i’m getting:
Sidebar does not exist in theme (using Inactive)

I realize the sidebars don’t exist in the new site. That is reason I wanted to use the export import function.

It might be complicating issues because I’m using multisite. Essentially I am trying to create a new site using multisite and automate as much of the setup as I can. i’m using a plugin called “default post” which should be able to copy the sidebars but that didn’t seem to work either. So i thought I would try this plugin for the sidebars and widgets.

Any idea how to actually export sidebars from one site, and upon import on the new site have it create the sidebars because they don’t exist yet?

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Sidebars are theme-specific. There is no way to export and import sidebars defined by one theme for use in another. Your sites need to use the same theme for seamless widget importing. This plugin only imports and exports widgets, not sidebars. If a sidebar does not exist in a theme then the widgets have no where to import into and will therefore go into Inactive for you to drag into a sidebar that the current theme itself has.
