Simple Recent Blog Entries Listed Outside of Blog Directory

It is done using the RSS feeds of the blog; whether it is through feedburner or directly by your feeds – it doesn’t really matter.
You need a “gizmo” (some script) that is able to display RSS feeds on your main page.

I pull 6 different feeds into the one area in my sidebar using this plugin. It works on 2.2.2.

Hmmm… James, does that gizmo work OUTSIDE of WP on a non-WP main index of a website?

I’ve done it with the Feedburner javascript more than once. Pretty simple to do if the blog is already using Feedburner.
