• Simple Local Avatars sounded like exactly what I wanted, simple, local, and minimal.

The problem is I can’t get it to work. I turned off Gravatars. When I try to upload an avatar from the user’s property page it shows up in the Media FIles. But no matter what else I do, the avatar never displays anywhere, not property page, comment, logged in user, nothing.

I tried removing it and putting it back. No change. It seems like lots of people have liked this plugin, so I’m trying to give it a chance before I give it a bad review.

@wporg4ssorg are you seeing the uploaded avatar render correctly on the user profile page? If so, it’s possible the theme you’re using isn’t utilizing the correct WordPress core filters to render avatars (see more here). Can you share a bit more about your WordPress version, theme version, and any other active plugins versions so we can better triage?

The avatar doesn’t show anywhere except as an image in the Media Library, where it’s showing three times, probably from multiple upload attempts. It does not show either in the comments or on the user’s profile page.

The Dashboard At a Glance section says: WordPress 6.5.4 running Essence theme.

Thanks for providing that plugin list! Some follow-up questions for you so I can try and fully replicate your issue and best help find a solution…

    I turned off Gravatars.

Can you share how/where you did this?

    Essence Theme Core

    The Bluehost Plugin

I’m not able to find either of these in the WP.org plugin repository, could you provide a link to each so I can get them loaded in my test site?

After setting up as close a site to what you’ve provided, I am seeing that uploaded images in Simple Local Avatars render as expected on the All Users: https://ibb.co/KF5YJg2. The basic Essence set up does not appear to render avatars on posts/pages, so I’m wondering if there’s a good template you’re using that I can check to ensure its outputting WP avatars correctly?

Here’s a ZIP of a WP Playground site that I’m using to try and triage so you can see what I’m seeing so far: https://file.io/5ghE9yidO6bc.

Thanks for your quick response. Sorry I took so long.

After I installed Simple Local Avatars I unchecked Show Avatars and checked Only show local avatars on the WordPress Discussion Settings page. To get rid of Gravatars completely I followed advice from this forum, checked Show Avatars so I could set the Gravatar default to None, then unchecked it again.

The site uses the Essence Theme from Lucid and is hosted on Blhuhost. I assume they installed their respective plugins, which I haven’t changed.

I’m a very experienced programmer in general and with ASP.NET, but I’m a beginner with WordPress and PHP. I’ve found the process of trying to set up a simple, basic WordPress blog difficult and confusing, lost in the flood of plugins insisting they’re necessary and the best, especially if I subscribe. The site is for my sister who was totally lost setting it up. She’d have given up long ago. I don’t want to work at the PHP level, sticking to simple, free plugins to meet her minimal needs for a small, non-commercial, membership site where she can discuss her blog posts with a small, managed group.

    Thanks for the help.

I’ve the same problem. The plugin loads the image correctly in the media but it is not displayed anywhere. Not even in the user settings page inside the dashboard and not even in the frontend.

I was debugging a client site with what I consider is the same issue:

    1. Avatars don’t show up on the frontend.
    2. Avatars are not showing up on the backend, not even on the User Profile page.
    3. No PHP & JavaScript errors, uploading functionality works fine.

Turns out that under Discussion Settings (wp-admin/options-discussion.php), the Avatar Display options was unchecked.

Therefore no avatars showed, neither Gravatars, nor Local Avatars. Toggled the option on, and everything is working fine.

    anyway

    Same in my current project:

    1. Avatars don’t show up on the frontend.
    2. Avatars are not showing up on the backend, not even on the User Profile page.
    3. No PHP & JavaScript errors, uploading functionality works fine.
