Hello , I’m using the newest version of Simply Static and have the Simply Static Pro plan.

Since the latest update, I’ve encountered lots of problems with Simply Static generating files to both: zip and local files; itt ends up freezing and stalling unable to generate new static files.

Checking the diagnostics it has write permissions and nothing has changed on that side. The issues started to arise with each new release since early January, earlier releases resulted in a site that would be very slow to generate, with the lastest release my site being unable to as of: Version 2.2.9. It looks like from release notes there’s been some major rewrites?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I’m presently blocked from generating my site now do this.

Hi @jessejones, do you have access to any debug/erros logs that have information about the freezing/stalling?

Once you hit generate, does it not do anything after a while? The “button” says “Cancel” and nothing happens? If you reload the page, does it start to do the same or finish the process?

Thanks for getting back with me @ibenic!
    Sure, I’ll provide more context:

    Theme/Plugins (
    – Hello Elementor (I’ve used this one from the start)
    – Elementor plugins (Used from the start)
    – Elementor Pro plugin (Used from the start)

^ the Simply Static plugin worked fine with all of the above and has been generating sites. It has only been the recent updates to Simply Static where the issue has arose.

    Generating site
    – Hitting “generate static site” button the “cancel” is displayed
    – It does not update the log output like before
    – It does not show progress like before, e.g. pages progressing, files being fetched, etc

Here’s a screenshot showing whole site generation. I brought up the Elementor part as that seems to be the last part it processes in files before freezing.

The last script appears to be something related to Elementor WooCommerce, but my guess is Simply Static is just getting stuck in some kind of recursive loop and having difficulty traversing file structures now. Probably related to changes to address things like Sitemap and other site structural navigation it previously used.

After 14 mins and refreshing still no change to the log. After 18 mins stopped it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MJhAYn3rvpO-PSXqF0fFf1FrbswVgmUt/view?usp=sharing

^ no output shown above for files and no progression. The site has < 30 pages, so should not take anywhere near this amount of time. Previously the site would be generated in 1-2 mins.

Tried separately to generate an individual file, not a whole site. This didn’t work consistently and when I did get it to run it took 20-30 mins for a single page. Previously this would take < 5-6 secs.

FWIW, I think this issue might also be connected to another support ticket from about a week ago.

Was able to get Simply Static to work by making some webserver changes, here’s what was changed (tldr: webserver Apache => Nginx):

    Old site settings:
    Webserver: Apache
    PHP version: 8.1.9
    Database: MySQL 8.0.16
    WordPress Version: 6.2

    New site settings:
    Webserver: Nginx
    PHP version: 8.1.9
    Database: MySQL 8.0.16
    WordPress Version: 6.2

    [2023-04-19 07:30:40] Setting up
    [2023-04-19 07:30:43] Fetched 409 of 409 pages/files
[2023-04-19 07:31:04] ZIP archive created: Click here to download
    [2023-04-19 07:31:04] Wrapping up
    [2023-04-19 07:31:04] Done! Finished in 00:00:25

^ it finished in less than < 30 secs with this change. This might not be a viable option for everyone and ideally Simply Static works with any common WordPress environment.

    Hello,

I am using the latest version of the plugin (2.3) but still have the same issue described here.

Generation of static pages to local files is freezed. No new files have been generated from several hours.
In the generation page of the plugin, I just have the cancel button and the same message in the activity journal.
All the checks are green in the Diagnostic page.

I tried to get a debug log without success.

Could you tell me what info you need to debug this problem ?

    Thanks.

@willes do you know what web server your WordPress instance is using? Can you post some of your site environment details? (Web server type, database, etc)

    Hi,

Sure. The site is running with Apache 2.4.57 as back-end and Nginx 1.23.4 as front-end, on a Debian 11.

The DB server is MariaDB 10.6 and php is 8.0.28.

I ran the generation twice and it stuck around 94.500 pages. Maybe there is some kind of limit ?
