I loaded the update for the storefront theme this week and it has made many changes to the site I’m developing. While many of the changes I was able to adjust, tonight I’ve been fighting with an HTTP ERROR 500 which I’m told is being caused by the child theme on the site which I’ve been using without problems until tonight when migrating the site.

This is a large ecommerce site which needs to be pushed back live as soon as possible as the longer it is down, the more revenue is lost. As many customizations were done with use of the child theme, I need to resolve this ASAP. The only substantial change made to the child theme today was copying an email template file to it for updated content.

I am unable to activate the child theme without being kicked out of the site with the 500 error. I then have to contact my host to change the theme so I can get back in. Is the new update incompatible with user created child themes? How can I fix this issue?

  • We haven’t had any other reports of user-created child theme that are no longer working – suggesting that this might just be isolated to the one you’re using.

The easiest way to find the conflicting code is to ask you hosting provider for the PHP error log: It should contain the file and line number where you can start troubleshooting.
