    Hello,

Multisite enforces lowercase letters and numbers only for usernames.

So, what happens to existing users who might have uppercase letters in their usernames on a single wordpress install and the site owner changes to multisite?

Do they remain uppercase? If so, what is the point in enforcing lowercase on a multisite?

    Thank you,

    Paul.

It’s my understanding that the restrictions on lowercase & numbers are a leftover of that bygone era when multisite was a separate version of WP.

It’s also my understanding that this restriction is only for users registering themselves, and that admins can add users with symbols (the @ in an email address, for instance) & capitals. So I would imagine that existing users will be fine, and nothing will happen to them.

FWIW, this came up recently with users in a network who needed to register themselves with an email address, and there may be a future upgrade to WP core to address this.
