Single Word Permalinks

Why is the Main Menu widget glitchy when the post title is a single word? I just had to change the permalink to several of my pages to include multiple words in order for the links to not 404. (i.e. I had to change “/links/” to “/my-links/” so it wouldn’t return a 404)
Why is this? What can I do to change it in the future?
