My site has never been lightning-speed, but it’s perfectly usuable. However for the past 4-5 days I’ve been unable to accomplish anything in the backend because it takes several minutes to load, and if I do get the editor to load, it takes forever to do anything. (Example: I was writing a post and wanted to turn a word into a link, and it took a full minute to bring up the box with the dropdown list.)

The public site is just as bad. It takes several minutes for pages to load, if they load at all. It’s basically unusable right now, which is challenging because I have some things I need to post by specific dates but am currently unable to post them without it taking all day. I’m afraid people won’t be able to access the posts, either, if the pages take an eternity to load.

I haven’t made any big changes recently—no new themes, plugins, etc. The only plugin I’ve updated in the past week was a Google update (I think Analytics? I tried to check the name, but can’t get the plugin page to load in the backend.)

This isn’t a general page speed problem related to resizing images, etc. (I know I have more work to do there, but the site worked well enough a few days ago.) I don’t think it’s my internet, as all other sites load fine. Is it hosting-related? Again, it worked fine until a few days ago.

I’m at a loss as to how to get speed back to where it was at the beginning of the week, at least so it’s fast enough to access the backend. I thought it was a temporary glitch, but now I’m not so sure.

Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated.

WordPress documentation has some general recommendations for you at https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/optimization/

Also, if site has lots of images, try reviewing https://kinsta.com/blog/optimize-images-for-web/

Thank you, but as I mentioned this isn’t a general optimization issue—it’s a drastic change that happened overnight, so I’m trying to figure out why. I’ve already done quite a lot of work on optimizing my images, and until this changed happened a few days ago, speed was good and the site and backend loaded quickly and without issue.

Also at the moment I’m also unable to load the backend in order to do any additional optimization.

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting provider’s documentation for specifics on these), navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. Hopefully, this will force the default theme to activate and rule out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

@macmanx Thank you! I was able to delete the Monsterinsights Google Analytics plugin, which is the only one I’ve updated in quite awhile, so I thought that might be the issue. As of yesterday I’m able to get into the backend, but it’s still slower than usual and I’m getting the “Connection Lost” error 3-4 times/hour. Does that mean it’s most likely a hosting issue? I don’t think it’s my internet connection as speed on all other websites seems fine, and even when the WordPress connection is lost I’m still connected everywhere else.

Yeah, “Connection Lost” means there’s either a problem with your Internet service provider or your hosting provider.

I figured. My internet service is fine—I’m currently using three devices simultaneously with zero speed or connection issues. Has to be hosting. I have Bluehost, and their customer service is absolutely useless, so contacting them gets me nowhere. Probably time to finally figure out how to switch to someone better.

If you move to another hosting provider, please make sure that you follow this guide: https://developer.www.ads-software.com/advanced-administration/upgrade/migrating/
