Something must have gone very wrong during the update Eric, as AO 2.4 does not have the “classlesses” directory any more.

I’d suggest to delete and re-install AO from scratch.

    hope this helps,
    frank

Hi Frank, it doesn’t help as I can’t even access my site or my site dashboard. Support team at Inmotion deactivated all the plugins and the site was still dead. Help?

that is _really_ weird, because based on the error the crooked half-updated version of autoptimize is still active. log into your site with (s)ftp (or open cpanel file manager or …) and rename wp-content/plugins/autoptimize into wp-content/plugins/autostoptimize, it’s simply impossible for the problem to persist after that operation. after that remove autoptimize (automatically deactivated by wordpress as living in autostoptimize) and install from scratch.

    Thread Starter dannydanny1

    (@dannydanny1)

That has already been done and the site is still dead. I deactivated ALL the plugins this morning using that method and the site is still dead. I then contacted Inmotion and they did the same and then they told me to contact the plugin owner. They said there are files being called that don’t exist and they can’t resolve the issue. So here I am.

Well, the autoptimize plugin folder was renamed . . . not to autostoptimize . . . I think I just added a “1” to the end of the folder name. Does it have to be exactly “autostoptimize”

no, the aim is just renaming the folder/ directory, as that causes WordPress to notice the plugin is gone and hence deactivating it.

if this does not work, then something (very weird) is happening at a webserver (php) level, which I (on my lone VPS-server) would try to solve by stopping apache/ nginx (in order to flush the PHP opcache).

    Thread Starter dannydanny1

    (@dannydanny1)

I talked to Inmotion again and they:

    1) removed all the cache from AO and my caching plugin
    2) renamed autoptimize folder itself
    3) replaced the htaccess file with default WP htaccess
    4) tried renaming the entire plugin directory

    Site is still completely dead.

This only confirms something _very_ fishy is going on which simply cannot be caused by AO any more as the folder is renamed. my gut feeling says the php opcache is ‘broken’ (cached code at PHP level which for some reason is not invalidated any more even if the PHP has changed), which is something inmotion will have to look into (and which _could_ be fixed by restarting the service that contains the PHP-processes).

    (@dannydanny1)

This is all really frustrating. The site broke on update of the AO plugin. All the error messages are related to the AO plugin. However, you say it’s not AO and Inmotion says it is AO and I’m left with a dead site.

All your suggestions have been taken. opcache flushed. Folder renamed. Etc. Nothing works.

So am I going to have to hire a developer to fix what AO has broken? I’m really frustrated with this. Currently Inmotion is working on replacing all the core WP files. Hopefully that doesn’t bork my custom CSS work, which has taken me many, many, many hours. As you can tell, I’m pretty frustrated.

And my site is still dead.

    Plugin Author Optimizing Matters

    (@optimizingmatters)

I totally understand the frustration Danny, but even from your very first post it was clear something very out-of-the-ordinary was going on, as classlesses/autoptimizePartners.php was in the error-log while that simply does not exist any more. The mere fact that the problem does not go away by renaming the folder (which is part of “fixing plugin issues 101”) confirms that this, although maybe triggered by the update, really is not an Autoptimize problem. I’ll be happy to continue brainstorming on this and have no problem discussing this with inmotion if need be, but at the moment I have no idea what might be causing this as by simply renaming the folder AO is out of the picture .. :-/

I see your site is up again @dannydanny1, what was the solution?

    Thread Starter dannydanny1

    (@dannydanny1)

Inmotion replaced all the WP core files and the site is working again. I’m a little afraid to continue using AO after this as I’m wondering if there is some sort of conflict with another plugin . . .

Also, my other sites are using AO. I haven’t updated them yet and I’m worried because they’re all using the same server configuration . . . best to disable and delete on my other sites? I don’t want to go through this again.

    Thanks for your help.

    my advice;
    * choose the least important site
    * ask inmotion to make a backup (and make a backup yourself as well using duplicator or whatnot)
    * remove autoptimize 2.3.4
    * check to make sure no errors occur and that there is no mention of autoptimize in your page’s sources
    * install autotopimize and activate 2.4.0

if anything goes wrong (which it should not, what you describe seems like a one off freak accident), you’ll still have your backup to restore.

Just updated https://myboringchannel.net — same thing happened. I was able to roll back to the previous version so no biggie . . . but something is definitely wrong with my websites’ setups and the AO plugin. And it’s a pretty big problem.

    Thread Starter dannydanny1

    (@dannydanny1)

Just realized I cannot deactivate the plugin now either. That also borks the site. So I can’t update. And I can’t deactivate. Totally stuck.
