• A number of months ago I uploaded wordpress to my website and began using it. I was experimenting with it to later use for a client that needed CMS. Anyways, I went about a month without logging on to play around with the blog online and when I went to log in yesterday, it said that I didn’t have a blog and needed to download one. I was confused, so I just went through with it and now all my information is lost on there. I tried to fix it by uploading from GoLive the files that I had here and they are not showing up. Specifically, I created a 404 error page and it will not work. I keep getting the wordpress blog homepage as a default for a page not being found. I am very frustrated and need to have this figured out quickly. Thanks for any help that you can give me!

  • Apologies, but your post is very confusing. I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying.

I went about a month without logging on

Not logging in won’t do anything…it’s not like WordPress resets itself because you haven’t logged in for a while. Did you contact your host to see if they had made changes to your server recently?

I didn’t have a blog and needed to download one

Now, I *know* that’s not the exact error message it gave you. What did it say?

I just went through with it

Went through with what? What did you do, exactly?

uploading from GoLive the files that I had here and they are not showing up

What files? The old blog files? Uploading those won’t do anything, as in WordPress, your posts are stored in the database, not in a folder. You can *import* posts, but uploading them to a folder won’t do anything.

More information is needed to diagnose your problem…

Sorry I wasn’t more specific. I am new to this forum/support stuff.

“I went about a month without logging on”
I was wondering if for some reason they delete my site if it’s not active for a month or something. I’m glad to know that it is not the case from your comment. I have not contacted my host to see if they made changes.

“I didn’t have a blog and needed to download one”
I’m really kicking myself here, because I do not remember the exact words of the error message, but it was something like “this blog does not exist” and “would you like to sign up for one?”

“I just went through with it”
I signed up for wordpress on my site by downloading it again hoping that I would then be able to re-access my original site.

“uploading from GoLive the files that I had here and they are not showing up”
Mainly I was referring to the 404.php page that I had created that was not showing up as my error not found page. I was guessing that the previous posts had disappeared because they were held online.

I hope that this helps my entry to be more clear.

“would you like to sign up for one?”

No WP install hosted on your server and installed by you would ask that question!
It might be your host has a “one-click-install” gizmo, or you are talking about a free hosted blogging tool…

    Not really clear.

I just read through some other posts trying to find similar problems and there was one where someone said something similar, but it didn’t seem to be resolved, so I could not get my answer. Anyways, she said that she got an error message saying that Wp was not installed yet and I remember mine saying that and there being some kind of button or something to install it. I thought by pressing this button I would be able to get back in there.

At this point, it seems like my previous wordpress blog has disappeared for good, which is actually not too devastating because it was mainly set up as a test. The thing that I am worried about is this happening again when I go to create the CMS site using WP for my client.

The other concern I have is that I cannot get that error page to show up that I created. I do not want my WP blog page showing up if someone enters a non-existing page on my company’s website.

If the message was that it wasn’t installed yet, but you’ve had it installed before, I would – first off – log into my hists’ control panel and use phpMyAdmin to look at the MySQL database you had created for WordPress. If it’s not there, I’d be asking the host what was up. If it *is* there, check your files and see if they’re still on the server (which I’m guessing they are if you go that message).

You shouldn’t have needed to download anything if the files were already there and the database was created.

But yeah, I’d first check out my database and see what’s there (or not).

I just had a thought of something that may have affected my WordPress site disappearing into thin air. Within the past month, I was experimenting with my MySQL database because a client had asked about forms being sent to a database instead of her email address. Anyways, I know that I had played around with a database that I created and possibly the original one created for WordPress. I wonder if I accidentally altered something which somehow removed WordPress from connecting there to the database. Do you agree that this is a possibility of the culprit for removing my WordPress site from view?

My url suddenly disappeared today. The last time i updated was yesterday late evening and when i signed out it was working fine. Now nothing is there. please help. thanks.

    i am sorry i didn’t tell you my site – https://www.hornafricasickchildren.org
    and i use wordpress.

HornAfrik: you should probably start your own thread – it’s maybe not the same situation….

isign4jc: you should ask your host if they might have had to upload an older backup of your install.
