Yesterday I starting getting a message that my site is experiencing technical difficulties and to check my email, but I have not received any email. I had been trying to get Ninja Forms working. I cleared my cache, deactivated all my plugins, then reactivated them again. Still the same message.
This afternoon I checked my site health and it is telling me that there is a critical issue:

Background updates ensure that WordPress can auto-update if a security update is released for the version you are currently using.

Warning Could not confirm that the wp_version_check() filter is available.
Passed No version control systems were detected.
Passed Your installation of WordPress doesn’t require FTP credentials to perform updates.
Error Some files are not writable by WordPress:

    index.php
    wp-cron.php
    wp-login.php
    wp-settings.php
    license.txt
    wp-mail.php
    wp-links-opml.php

    wp-includes/images/down_arrow.gif
    wp-includes/images/spinner.gif

Any suggestions as to how this has happened? New to WordPress and feeling very much out of my dept here. Not confident about making changes outside the WordPress Dashboard.

  • It’s probably a permissions problem with those files. Your webhost might be able to help you with that.

Then you’ll probably need to manually update WordPress as part of some WordPress core update probably didn’t work.

This article deals with both issues…

    Thanks @jnashhawkins for your help.

I contacted my webhost, and they were able to resolve the issue for me.

The issue was the Jetpack plugin. They deactivated Jetpack and Ninja Forms and after a refresh everything is back to normal again. Apparently lots of users have issues with Jetpack from time to time.

As mentioned before very new to WordPress, but learning everyday and today was another lesson in patience. I am thinking now that if I had refreshed my page after deactivating all my plugins and took the time the slowly reactivate them one by one and refreshing after each reactivation, then I may not have had to chase around for answers, but at least I have a strategy for the next time I get this error.

I probably assumed a little too much when you mentioned you deactivated your plugins then reactivated them. I figured you had tested between the two processes and I ruled out your theme at the same time even though I probably should have questioned that also.

I triggered on that ‘Error Some files are not writable by WordPress: ‘ thinking an update didn’t complete properly. My bad!

This feedback helps me figure out where I need to rethink my own processes.

Thank you for following up and if you need anything else let us know.

So after all I have said, it happened again. I have sent an email to my contact at Godaddy. Cant access my site through the URL, as the message now appears on the homepage. To access WP Dashboard I have to add /wp-admin to my site’s URL.

I was trying to make changes to my contact page, by replacing a Ninja Forms shortcode with a Contact Form 7 shortcode. Now not only can I not access my settings or website but also Elementor Drag and Drop widgets will not load.

    Feeling defeated.

The site is experiencing technical difficulties.
    url: spacetree.online
?? , i tried every thing like unlink the plugins from cpanel or deleting default themes etc, as you tubers said, but sadly facing same problem.
First time this problem occur yesterday morning , after completing website.
then i installed word press again and again i redesigned and then today morning same problem, that is going on ??
but i did backup before sleeping, do thx to god , hope it will not occur tommarow!!!

I’ve just had this problem appear on one of my sites. I received the email alert right away. Since 5.2, there’s a recovery mode that is accessible by the link in the email. The code expires in 24 hours.

About the error: One or more themes failed to load properly. Oddly, I use that same theme on another site, with no problems.

To fix the problem, I switched to another theme, deleted the problematic theme, reinstalled the theme I wanted, and switched back.

I am experiencing this same issue and have tried to resolve it w/ the above suggestions to no avail. I deleted every plugin but a few basic ones, and even those I tried deactivating but nothing has worked. I have received no email alerts about anything, either.

Anybody have any idea what might continue to be causing this?

I’m also having the same issue. I have 4 websites running off of a server and all 4 went down with this same error. I have disabled all plugins and tried switching themes to default (1 is running default) but it still fails. Help us WordPress!!

I have same problem and solved with deactiving the jetpack from cpanel

The only way I can get into admin is to rename all the themes. As soon as I try to download any new one it downloads fine, then on enabling reverts to technical difficulties. I have no plugins running. This is 4 sites off the same server.

I did a clean install of wordpress, rebuilt 3 of the websites and it worked fine for 2 days, then has reverted to technical difficulties again! Please help

I got the same isseu on one of my sites, seems like a few hours and then I breaks even though I do a clean install.

I picked up on style and scripts folders in my public/html in filemanger and when I delete them they come back.

When I am in the builder all seems to work 100% and styles are there but as soon as n signed out of dashboard device logs in it seems that all styling disappears.

    Any one solved this?

Whenever i try to install yoast seo its saying site facing technical difficulty

I get the same error. Then, I get the email. Then, usually after a few minutes, it’s fine. It doesn’t reject the plugin, it accepts the update. I don’t understand why all the false positives.

Truly… and without a single doubt… This is the single most ignorant, horribly thought out, short-sighted “error” code in all of web design. Holy mother of god, you guys missed the mark on this one. Have multiple sites broken and ZERO intelligent information about how to fix them.
I pray to the Internet gods that this ignorant code is removed in a VERY soon update.

Jetpack was the cause of “the site is experiencing technical difficulties”. This error only showed up on mobile browsers. Deactivated and all is back to normal.
