After installation to evaluate this plugin for Google Analytics my Site Health Status tool now indicates:

“ eCommerce data is not being tracked MonsterInsights
You are using WooCommerce but the MonsterInsights eCommerce addon is not active, please Install & Activate it to start tracking eCommerce data.

    View Addons”

Explain to me why not having a commercial (or any other) add on simply because I have Woocommerce installed has anything to do with my “Site Health”?

Leveraging a diagnostic monitoring tool to insert this kind of “recommendation” is nothing more than abusing end users with a “nag” advertisement that has nothing to actually do with the “health” of my website.

I received an email reply from MonsterInsights stating that the site health tool is a core feature and they have no way to disable site health warnings.

It’s true the site health feature is a WordPress core feature. It’s also true that MonsterInsights is explicitly telling the site health feature that eCommerce tracking isn’t taking place. The site health tool even identifies what plugin is notifying them of that. If this wasn’t the case we would see this “warning” (it’s actually an ad) even if their plugin wasn’t installed.

    The issue is two fold.

    1) Google is the one actually doing the tracking … not MonsterInsights. How I’ve configured Google Analytics is irrelevant to both WordPress and the plugin. Being “warned” to purchase a commercial plugin, especially if one doesn’t want/need eCommerce tracking, is improper at best. Put you ads in your plugin for sure … just don’t inject it into a diagnostic tool to disguise the ad.
    2) Regulatory issue potential: I didn’t opt in for eCommerce tracking; don’t need to be reminded of it; have no obvious way to opt out of it; and never gave consent for MonsterInsights to query my WordPress configuration beyond requirements to install the plugin … remember neither WordPress nor MonsterInsights actually tracks the eCommerce analytics. Google does!

GDPR compliance in a nutshell states “don’t contact someone unless they specifically ask to be. Don’t assume they want to hear from you. Don’t cold contact them, and don’t send them irrelevant information that they didn’t request” … this doesn’t just apply to email marketing. It applies to all marketing without regard to the method of delivery.
