• Hi, I have uploaded a favicon file, png format, 512×512, using the “Site Icon” in the customizer of WordPress. It works in Safari, Firefox (Mac and PC) and Internet Explorer. It does not, however, work in Google Chrome (Mac or PC). Instead it shows the little blank page icon.

Website is https://www.eyecandypopper.com, can anyone suggest why it would not be working in Chrome? Clearing cache has no affect. Funny thing is, I’m sure it was working when I first uploaded it, but it certainly isn’t working now. Also when I inspect the page source, I don’t see an ico file anywhere, I think it’s using png versions, could that be the issue?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • Hello @acann,
Please use this format in the header file to place the favicon for your site:
    “<link rel=”shortcut icon” type=”image/x-icon” href=”/favicon.ico” />”
Also notice that the file type is “.ico”. Even Chrome and IE require file size of 16*16.

    Hope this helps you!

Thanks, I’m trying to figure out why the Core WordPress “Site Icon” feature isn’t doing this for me. It seems to work for other browsers, but not Chrome? Shouldn’t the Site Icon feature work?

    Hi @acann,
Site Icon feature works perfectly for all browsers like firefox, chrome, internet explorer, safari, etc.
You can re-upload any image in site icon.

    Thanks!

Sorry I may have been unclear, a couple of months ago I uploaded a 512×512 PNG file using the WordPress Site Icon feature. It appears correctly in IE 11, Safari 10 and Firefox 49, both Mac and PC. It does not appear at all in Google Chrome 53, Mac or PC.

Is there a reason for this? Will using a PNG with the WordPress Site Icon feature not work with Google Chrome for some reason? Maybe Chrome requires an ICO and won’t work with PNG?

So to reiterate, I have already made use of the Site Icon feature of wordpress, and it does not work in Google Chrome. I have tried on Windows (7 and 10), Mac OSX 10.11.6, with or without incognito tabs, clearing cache, etc. The favicon does not appear in Google Chrome, it appears fine in all other browsers I’ve tested.

As a workaround, I converted the PNG to an ICO file, named it favicon.ico, and uploaded it to the root of the domain. Seems Chrome is defaulting to read that properly. Would still be interested to know why the core Site Icon feature of wordpress does not work for Chrome.

I’ve noticed this issue as well and having to do favicons the old way, because Chrome doesn’t like it, negates the purpose of having the site icon functionality in the first place. There has got to be a better answer to this issue.

That’d be nice, or even if the “Site Icon” feature in wordpress would additionally save an ico file in the root as a “catch-all” for browsers that don’t recognize what it currently does.
