Site has been up running WP since April ’08 on HostGator. After 8 years of daily posting of videos and images, the site takes 10 seconds or more to load where you can scroll.

I’m thinking the database is too large.

Should I delete a few years of old archives in an effort to help the site load faster?

    Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I’m going to monitor the answers you get. I use hostgator, too. Have the same problem. PLUS often, the plug ins I use don’t work right. The owners of the theme checked and they think it’s because the package I have on hostgator is not big enough for all the cr** wordpress adds to the system.

One of the things I saw, in my theme’s setting, is that whatever the PHP Max Input Vars, is, they offer 1000 and my theme needs 1940. I need to see if the WordPress hosting they offer (It’s on sale right now) would give me that extra space.

I have to say that I have had other WP sites over the years. Never had this problem until around 6 months ago.

A good way to find out what is causing the delay in your sites loading time would be to do following 2 things:

    – Perform the test on https://gtmetrix.com/. This will tell you where your site needs to be optimized
    – Install and run following plugin (after the gtmetrix test has finished): https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/p3-profiler/. This will show you if there’s one or more plugins causing too much load and thus slowing down your site.

Feel free to pass along your url’s. I’d be happy to take a look myself.

@fcgrabo It might help if the number of posts displayed on one page is reduced. However I just visited sixpacktech from my phone and it loaded reasonably fast.
It might also help to use a caching plugin, but they can be tricky to get right. I don’t think the amount of data in a database will increase or decrease load speed until the number of posts reaches the millions. It is likely more to do with bandwidth and server speed which your host will be more helpful with.

@elevatingyourbusiness i believe it is possible to increase php max input var, however after some googling it appears as though this is related to how many variables can be passed by WordPress or input into forms, so increasing may not have any affect on the speed. But could explain why some plugins don’t function as expected, as they need to pass variables.
