I have full access to my Google account, but I can not get past the initial Site Kit verification to begin using Site Kit.

When I click on Site Kit icon in my WordPress site, I am taken to a “Welcome to Site Kit” page and says that step 1 is to verify site ownership. There is a “Sign in with Google” button. I click it.

I am taken to “Choose an account to continue to Site Kit.” I click the account.

I am then taken to a “Verify it’s You” page. I am shown that it will send a verification code to a phone number. It lists the last two digits of a phone number I have not used for at least 4 years. Some time ago, I updated the number within the Google account. I had no trouble doing so and have verified that the number is correct within the Google account. I also added my email as secondary contact.

So I click on “More Ways to Verify”… and am taken to the same incorrect number. It does not give me a secondary option. No other number or email address.

No idea what to do since I am easily able to access the account through normal means.

Oh, and I made sure to sign out of all accounts before making another attempt. Same result.

    Hi @eddiewill9,

Thanks for reaching out. When connecting Site Kit it uses your Google account, to connect to the various Google services. If you’re being asked to verifying that it’s you signing in unfortunately it’s not something we can assist with here in the Site Kit plugin support forums.

From a check elsewhere on the Google Account Help Center it looks like you should be able to start an account recovery process.

As you mentioned you have setup email contact I would imagine you can use this to recovery your account details and edit your phone number once more if it’s somehow incorrect.

Sorry we can’t be of more assistance on this. Once you do have access to your Google account once more be sure to get in touch if you run into any issues setting up Site Kit.

Thanks, I appreciate the response. I never “lost” my account to require recovery, but I went through the recovery process any way. Nothing changed. I can still access the account in it’s entirety, I just can’t get Site Kit to verify.

The google verification t seems stuck in the past– continues to text to long un-used number as a verification method, while ignoring the current number as well as the secondary email, both of which are clearly listed with my Google account. It’s weird, And seemingly impossible to correct, as all you can do is “Recover,” which does not fix this.

Thanks again, I’m off to see if somewhere out there I might stumble across a “How to have Google Site Kit verification successfully pull the correct data from it’s own company servers.” Until then, I don’t think there’s any Site Kit in my future.

    Hi @eddiewill9,

Thanks for the update, and I can understand the frustration, that does seem unusual if the phone number is correctly listed within your Google account. Site Kit uses Google’s OAuth 2.0 to verify a user with their Google account. This part of the setup process is independent of Site Kit, and not something we can action or bypass within the plugin.

As there are a number of reasons why a user may be asked to verify their account upon logging in with their Google email the Google Help Center should be able to assist better than we can here.
