    user contributed post, voting to front page etc?

  • You could at some level, but the reality is that social sites use very specialized code (in general) to make the site more interesting and more functional — and at that point, you could start from scratch and develop a new system in a few weeks of work that was suited specifically to the particular end result you were looking for. (I did just that, about 100 man-hours for a core system…)
