• I need some help troubleshooting – I’ve searched and read a lot throughout this forum but can’t seem to find an answer, so here goes:

I have two installs of WP on my site. The newest one, currently under development, is with WP 2.5. Problem is, the site frequently bogs down and essentially refuses to load any pages. Then, sometime later, it comes back to life and I can get a little work done, then it goes bad again.

    site is here: https://www.heraldleaderphoto.com/derby/2008

Here’s what I know: The server is running PHP 4.3.2. Don’t know much else about it (I don’t have good access to it since it’s a corporate thing. They’re not much help – I have to figure a lot of this stuff out myself)

The best I can get from an error log is this: undefined entity at line 289, column 67, referer: https://www.heraldleaderphoto.com/derby/2008/

But I can’t seem to find anything wrong there and it’s the same message on four different post pages that I’ve tried to access when it locks up.

I’ve reinstalled WP 2.5, but I have not tried to downgrade it yet. The other install of WP (2.3), which is on the same server, is working fine.

Anyway, any help I an get with troubleshooting would be much appreciated. Be aware I might need some details in your suggestions if they get overly technical.

    Thanks!

  • 2.5 has bugs and issues..my best advice to you would be to downgrade.

Your server is running a very outdated version of PHP. You may want to inquire if they’re going to upgrade, at some point. Or you can look for a new host.

Thanks Darkpress, you’re probably right. I was just hoping I could use the upgrade for both my blogs – it does have some nice features to it. Patience, I guess. I tend to be too optimistic sometimes at being an early adopter, sometimes at my own peril.

Are you running Flash movies of similar size on your other blog? I think the one you are running now is probably pretty big, the pictures are large and high quality. Perhaps the “corporate” people who set up your web server account gave you a lower priority than other tasks running on the same system. That would account for the uneven performance.

The other site/install is completely multimedia – 90 percent flash slideshows and videos and it has always run pretty smoothly. We’ve handled 100k pageviews/4k visitors a day without any hiccups. The new install is still in development so it doesn’t have any traffic at all yet.

To me, it appears to have something to do with the wp 2.5 install or the theme or some conflict between it all. Problem is, I’m not experienced enough to know how to troubleshoot it – and I don’t have a lot of control over our server.
