Help please as I’m quite a newbie to WordPress.

I recently tried to update my site from 3.9.1 to 4.0.1.

The message came back that the update installation had failed and when I tried to navigate through WP nothing would respond.
Since then, I can’t even log into my site, and when entering the domain all I get is a blank screen.
Although I was updating to 4.0.1, since then I now think it’s gone to 4.1 with me trying to retrieve the situation.

Looking at my control panel my public_html files still seem to be intact, so I would appreciate some advice on what has gone wrong and how I can retrieve the situation please.

  • You should be able to do a manual update –

Since this reply things went from bad to worse, culminating with my host company reinstalling all files from their backup.

The upshot of this was that the website will now load but I am unable to access the back end of the site at all – entering the username and password produces a completely clear page even though the heading tab is labelled Dashboard. The hosting company could only suggest that I seek help from WordPress support.

I am able to access the File Manager via cPanel.

I would again welcome any suggestions that can get me back ‘operational’.

What’s the site URL? Where is it hosted?

For info, when I log on to the site, I can now see the top line of the WP site with ‘Howdy Username’ top RH corner, but if I click on say Dashboard, the page goes blank.

So go to Cpanel or FTP and deactivate your plugins by renaming the plugins folder on the server. See if that makes any difference.

If not, leave them off and rename your active theme’s folder:

    wp-content
       themes
           TOTAL.HOLD

    See if that fixes things.

    Hi again and thanks

I renamed the plugin folder and that made no difference, other than obviously disabling the slider etc. I still could not log in.

I then renamed the active theme’s folder as suggested, and couldn’t get anything (site, backend etc) at all.

I really appreciate your assistance on this.

I still see the same theme and various plugins on your site – so something isn’t changing or working. You’ll need to ask your hosting company for help if FTP or Cpanel isn’t working.

Sorry, my mistake, I didn’t realise that you wanted to view!
I’ve changed the settings back now as you requested.

So it looks like you probably don’t have a default theme in the theme folder? You need to copy one of the twenty-something themes into that folder – so that WP will default to that theme – and see if your site is working then.

    So download twentyfourteen from here:

    https://www.ads-software.com/themes/twentyfourteen

And then do the manual update:

But I have – in the themes folder are:
    TOTAL.HOLD
    twentyfourteen
    twentythirteen
    twentytwelve
    index.php

That’s strange indeed. So something else must be going on. Try enabling debug to see what you get for errors:

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Debugging_in_WordPress

Also, just to rule it out, have you asked your host about anything that might be going on with the server?

    Thread Starter basils57

    (@basils57)

Thanks again; I’ve checked with the host – no problems there.

If I enable debug how will we know if there are any errors if we can’t view the backend?

    Thread Starter basils57

    (@basils57)

I sorted out my question above.

    Enabling Debug produced:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_json_encode() in /home/thefoot/public_html/wp-admin/includes/misc.php on line 668

    Does this help at all?
