I have successfully migrated a test site, one that I didn’t care about breaking from the remote server to my local LAMP stack. I followed the instrucitons on codex. With a little guidance I managed to both keep the remote site intact and get the local site running.

However, when I went to migrate the actual site I want to work on I am getting a “404 like” error. The site menu displays as if there’s no CSS and the site displays:
    Error – Page Not Found
The page or post you were looking for does not exist or has been moved to another location.
Again, just for emphasis, the site’s menu is displayed on this page.

When I try to navigate through the menu I get a real 404 error and when I try to go to localhost/wp-admin or anywhere I get the 404.

Is this a database error or something in the install files?
