• I’ve taken over a redesign of a WordPress site. Am new to WP. Don’t wish to learn and change using the live site, so when I heard I could install MAMP/WP/copy-of-site on my Snow Leopard Mac, that sounded great.

Didn’t find one source of How To, so I worked with info from here and there. Everything seems fine with one big exception. On my local server, I have the site installed, and can open the Dashboard. It shows the right number of pages. When I click to edit a page, it looks fine.

But… nothing can be previewed. Page View yields a blank screen. Clicking on the site name in the upper left corner of the Dashboard shows blank too.

I can post some info about the URLs, etc. that I’m using – if helpful. TIA…

Well, forgive me, but I am more than a little discouraged. Someone has told me that if I get the success screens, and if the Dashboard shows the whole site, and if the Dashboard functions normally (EXCEPT for Page View and other previewing) that the installation is a success.

Something else is causing my problem, they said. Using that article to go back and redo the installation, without a clue what I might need to pay particular attention to, seems like a couple hours of work with a 5% chance of helping. An exercise in mounting frustration.

I went to “Installing_WordPress_Locally.” I searched for Page View, view, etc. to see if my problem was mentioned. See if there were instructions on setting up Page View. Nothing.

If this was the only hurdle I would face in learning WordPress, it would be easy to grin and bear whatever it took. 4 or more complete installs? No problem. (I’ve done 2.) But once this problem is solved, if solved it is, there surely will be others. And if the help in this forum is just to be sent back to the beginning armed with no new knowledge, then this 71-year-old mind is not up to the challenge.

Thank you for the help you offered. I regret that I cannot make better use of it.

Check the Resources at the end of the page. There’s a specific link to an article on using MAMP.

Thanks again. There seemed to be several. But 3 links went to gone pages. 3 required passwords. And 4 wound up back at the original “Installing WordPress Locally Using MAMP” article. I may have missed something (there were 100+ links), but I didn’t find anything. But that’s OK.

I’m going to take a “break” of sorts by taking the “WordPress 3” training at lynda.com. Might get lucky there. If not, I’ll forget the Local Server and install a copy of the live site on another server I have as of this afternoon.

The age of the doc and the relative scarcity whispers to me that Local Server installs are NOT all that common. Perhaps I wandered off the main road.

    As someone said, thanks again.
