It would really be nice if in a future version of wordpress there was a built in component to handle changing a sites URL. Yes yes I know there is a procedure for this, change the URL in the admin or go through php myadmin and update it there but that doesn’t really get you there because image links and other things connected to the url don’t get updated. If we had a tool to change the url which also updated the links to the uploads folder etc that would really be nice. Just a wish….

Sadly, that won’t happen unless we come up with a way to link images without having to use absolute URLs, in a way that will support everyone who did it that way for the last 6 odd years.

Although it’s a stand alone script, this solution is the best I’ve found. It works better then a simple search and replace on a SQL dump as it maintains the integrity of serialised objects/arrays, and all image and URLs stay in tact

ARG I’ve been struggling with this ALL DAY. ?? I followed the codex articles, and no where in there did it mention how doing a ‘search and replace’ of URLS would kill off widget and plug-in settings. I wished the Codex stated what Damian just stated…(about the arrays – I uploaded my database at least 5 times trying to change the URLS only to lose widget settings, etc) it would have saved me several frustrating hours of thinking I was smoking the crack pipe again. ??

Had I known I would have made notes of what my widget settings were in the first place, even if I had to go back in manually and restore them.

I to wish the whole URL site was automated, but there is a plugin to help with all the files that don’t get changed over called Velvet Blues Update-URLs https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/velvet-blues-update-urls/
Big time saver and very easy to use.
